Lilo and Stitch

I’m a sucker for a soft hearted story and Lilo and Stitch is just that. A good solid story with some very very funny stuff tossed in for good measure. There are so many positive things to say about this film.

First, the animation is beautiful. I love the overall look of the drawings and the mixture of computer animation with hand drawn images. There is more about the artist who designed the look of the film, on the DVD, so look for that.

Second, I think any kid film that can make me laugh 60% of the time is an excellent statement about the adults who put their hearts into making a story that we old folks can enjoy too. I appreciate the subtle humor, the topical subject matter, the honest approach to family, loneliness and sadness. Disney films always have a sadness in them that gives the lead characters a reason to overcome whatever challenge they are facing. That is a common theme, but in Lilo and Stitch it is not about being sad or lonely, it’s about moving on and finding your place among people who care about you. The clever little jokes and funny funny interactions between the characters, not to mention their individual personalities shining through with facial and body language, it’s all put together in a way that made it seem perfectly natural for a 33 and 35 year old to sit and watch without a kid within a 5 mile radius. :)

Last, but not least, is the voice acting. I was impressed with all of the actors and their heart felt performances. My husband even caught me tearing up at one point.. YES, ok, I teared up at an animation movie. So what, I’m willing to admit my sensitive side. The characters are solid and the acting is on par with the not so complex, but very heart warming story.

The music is lovely, not your typical pop idleish Disney fare. This time full on orchestral score with all the emotion and richness of a live action feature.

For not knowing what to expect, I was overwhelmingly pleased with my Lilo and Stitch experience. I wonder if I’m really still a kid at heart…. if so that’s the only thing that’s still young.haha
