Something About Toast

Posted on Wednesday, April 02 2008

My Grandma made the best toast I had ever had in my life. She buttered the old iron skillet, sliced her homemade bread and fried it in the pan until it was just perfect, amazing. She always had molasses, honey, and usually had some homemade jam or jelly. I had some in the morning, and requested a piece at lunch, ahd then around bed time when she asked if we needed a late night snack that’s what I wanted.

My mom used to make the best cinnamon toast. She toasted the bread, buttered it and then DOUBLE toasted it while she made a butter, sugar, and cinnamon mixture in a small pan on the stove. It was melty and gooey and it was always like dessert for breakfast.

I’ve been in the hospital a few times in my life and usually the food isn’t very exciting. That wobbly green stuff, the weird mashed potatoes, and that container of tan substance that might be tapioca pudding or gravy, I’m never quite sure. As a beacon of light and happiness on the corner of the tray is a sad but welcome little pile of corner cut toast and little pods of margerine and jelly. The jelly is always grape, not my favorite, but for some reason that toast and grape jelly tastes so good….

….and then there’s today, but this wasn’t the first time. I’m in the tub, taking my standard dip before work. I had only been awake for a little while and as my husband knows these early day baths can take a while. Soon after settling in with the bubbles and handmade soap from Etsy :) I hear a knock at the door and in walks my wonderful spouse carrying a plate and a cup. He had made me two slices of toast and a cup of hot tea. Tubside delivery is pretty darn nice. The toast tasted even better than Grandma’s and Mom’s put together. Just knowing that the love of my life would take the time to make me some toast…it might not sound romantic, but I think it’s fantastic.

They all have that hidden touch of love in there, as corny as that sounds, but I guess toast is as good a way as any to show someone a bit of tender lovin’ care. :) Make a memory, make some toast for someone you love.
